Bit Cold

It's -25 degrees Celsius out today (That's -13 F, for those of you on the old-school system, according to Google).  Once you take the windchill into effect, it's -40.    While more nothern parts of the country get these temperatures routinely at this time of year, it's in the upper range for my area.

No exposed skin out there today!  I'm hoping that all the homeless got into shelter last night;  extra beds were opened up, and warming centres.  Last night was the kind of night that leads to fatalities, otherwise, I'm afraid. :(

When I woke up this morning, it was a bit cold in the apartment, but nothing an extra sweater or two couldn't handle.  It made me very glad I'm not in one of the parts of the country without hydro right now!

The schools are closed today as well.  While my family isn't the sort to drive kids to and from school when they can be dressed sensibly for the weather and walk ten minutes,  that's double the length of time it takes for exposed skin to freeze at this temperature.

Though I'm told the kids are planning to try the experiment where you take hot water outside, throw it up in the air, and it turns into snow today.  They saw it on TV last night and were thrilled, so as soon as it gets up above -30, they got permission to try it. LOL

  1. A bit cold :) I'm pretty sure recess will be cancelled today...
We're the same here in New England and have been off and on during the past week. We're surrounded by farms so I worry about the animals, wild and domestic, out in the cold too.

    1. The animals are a worry! The farms around here tend to be better heated and insulated than the houses, for the most part, but one hopes the wild creatures have got good sheltered spots! :(

It's a balmy -27 with windchill today, so better in range with the temperatures we're used to. :)

  2. Brrrr... it's chilly here, but nothing like that. Keep warm and safe. Can't wait to hear how the snow making experiments went. Do tell!

  3. Kids sure know how to have fun don't they? How did the experiment go?

Keep indoors and stay warm! Weather is crazy everywhere at the moment, snowing and blizzards over there, heatwave and storms over here...

    1. It was a success! Apparently it really does work.... LOL

It does seem to be one of those "extreme weather" sort of years, doesn't it! We've warmed up quite a bit today, so hopefully it cools down for you. :)

  4. Yikes, I can't even begin to comprehend temperatures that low. I think we'd go below 0 once every couple of years!

    1. You are living the dream of many Canadians! LOL

But really, it's not normally that bad. With the wind dying down, we're already back up to -16 again. :)

  5. I'm afraid that is just tooooo cold to even think about! Noooo, I couldn't bear it I'm sure. It's been 19C here today and yesterday got up to 21C, although it's expected to be a big cooler again in a few days. I really am a wimp when it comes to the cold, so I hope you'll keep warm and safe.....

    1. LOL 21 degrees sounds really nice! I don't mind the cold too much, but I'm a terrible wimp about the heat. When it gets up around 30C in the summer, I'm collapsed on the floor bemoaning my fate. I think it is all what you are used to... :D
